Waiting For Our DNA Results

My name is Carrington, but you can also call me Kei. I'm 15 years old, and I live in Manitoba, Canada. I'm in the 10th grade, and I'm of full Han Chinese descent... or so I've been told. The truth is, me and my family don't really know anything about our genetic heritage. Very little is known about our ancestors. 

There is a story about my father's maternal side of the family, that may indicate some non-Chinese ancestry. It's said that my great-grandfather was looking through his family tree, and found lineage that traced back to Siberia (Russia?) and Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, etc.) Unfortunately, we can't confirm that this story is true, since back then being mixed-race wasn't exactly considered something to be proud of, especially in Asia. So great-grandpa just stopped looking. Dang it. 

 I really wanted to find out more about my ethnic background, especially as I've often had people ask me if I was something other than Chinese... I've been asked if I was half-Asian and half-white, half-Asian and half-Hispanic (yeah, what a surprise), Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Filipino, Thai, Indonesian... you name it. I talked with my parents, and it turned out that they had just as many questions as I did. So we decided to get our DNA tested by CRI Genetics to find out more. 

 We are currently waiting on our results, but they should be here in a few weeks! As soon as I get the results, I will be analyzing them and describing what it means to our family now that we know these results.

Developing True Unshakeable Confidence With God

The teen years often get a bad rap. They are often characterized by cliques, parties, bad behaviour, angst and all around confusion. Our families tend to take second priority to our newfound friend circles. Everyone is trying to fit in and be liked by everyone. The standards we set are often too high, leaving a group of people who don't meet the standards and don't suck up to (or aren't liked by) the people who do on the outskirts. And when it comes to adolescence, you are either popular or unpopular, and often if you are unpopular, you are viewed as having nothing. Most adults wouldn't think this matters that much. DNA Results Arrived... My Thoughts

Hi everyone, Kei here. Today I'm here to tell you that... our family's DNA results arrived! We filmed a video to analyze the results, and the video will be up on my YouTube channel ASAP (I've been very busy with homework and preparing for driver's ed). I will be discussing the results in this post, and what they mean to me. I was the first to check my results. They broke down like this: My mom checked her results, which are as follows: And here are my dad's results: We were very surprised to find out that my mother was not 100% Han Chinese as previously believed. She did indeed have Japanese (the one minority that we had some suspicions of), but after that it was surprise after surprise (though the vast majority of these percentages were close to or exactly 0.1%). While Peruvian, Sri Lankan Tamil and Bengali had all appeared in my results, Mexican, Esan in Nigeria and North European had not (nor did Mom think she would have these roots at all). We
